Enrolment options

This 4.5-hour online course is designed to give you a better understanding of how to cost a comprehensive plan for achieving universal WASH services that last at district level.

It has specifically been developed for Rwanda but can be used in different contexts. 

This course has been made possible by the generous support of the American people through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). It has been developed by Isoko y’Ubuzima, a 5-year USAID-funded project implemented by the consortium of Water For People, IRC, CARE International, VEI, and AEE.


Course objectives

By the end of the course, you will have a good understanding of:

  • The basic concepts of the Life-Cycle Cost Approach which are an important step in District WASH Master Planning
  • How to use the set of Excel tools “Life-Cycle Costing of WASH services in Rwanda” for identifying required expenditures for infrastructure investments, operation and maintenance and the expenditures for direct support to the service providers.
  • How to identify the financing or funding needs by the different stakeholders for achieving the targets of your WASH master plan

    Course outline

    This course has the following sessions: 

    • Welcome - Costing sustainable WASH services in Rwanda (i.e., this session)
    • Session 1 - WASH systems strengthening and the importance of understanding finance
    • Session 2 - Introducing life-cycle costs
    • Session 3 - Life-Cycle Costing for District WASH Master Planning

    Complete the sessions in consecutive order (i.e., Sessions 1 to 3).
